Monogrammed Drop Cloth Table Runner

Have you noticed that I have a real 'thing' lately for painters drop cloth? I'm starting to feel about it how George Cosenza felt about velvet. But, if you ever see a picture like this of me and drop cloth on this blog, please feel free to call the authorities. Anyway… I had some long scraps left over from my Christmas Stocking project along with a short length of ball fringe. And you know how I love table runners…well, one thing led to another and I came up with this monogrammed drop cloth table runner:

The table runner was easy, I cut a strip of drop cloth to fit the length of the table and hemmed the one raw side (drop cloth comes pre-hemmed-joy!). Then I stitched the ball fringe into place on each end. The hand embroidered monogram was something I had never tried, but I have done some cross stitch in the past and figured I would give it a shot.

First, I chose a font that I liked for my "E." After much research and deliberation I settled on a font called Monogram…total shocker, right? Next, I printed out my "E" to the desired size and trimmed it out with an exacto knife.

I traced the "E" onto the table runner and shaded it in so I could see it well.

Using embroidery thread, a needle, and a wooden hoop, I stitched the outline of the letter and filled in the wide spaces with longer stitches.

Finally, I used a whip stitch to cover my original stitches for a more coheasive look. Probably not the best embroidery job in the whole world, but I think it's pretty good for my first attempt and I am really pleased with the finished table runner.

for a first time..... very nice!
